Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1: How accurate is the location?
With a non-GPS enabled BlackBerry smartphone, the locations are approximated based on cellular tower. Accuracy is dependent on cell tower density and available data. Some cellular towers are documented and some are not. If you are in an area where the cell tower is not documented, your location cannot be determined and the dashboard map will display a default location.
With a GPS enabled smartphone, the location can be up to several meters depending on your GPS signal and connection.
Q2: I have 5,000+ contacts and some of them have contact pictures, can SmrtGuard back them all up?
Yes we can! In fact, in the "Contact Tab" within the website, you can actually see the individual contact pictures.
Q3: Does SmrtGuard Pro backup all of my emails?
SmrtGuard Pro for BlackBerry smartphones only backs up the 50 most recent emails for EACH inbox on your device. So let's say you have 3 inboxes, SmrtGuard will backup a total of 150 emails (50 most recent emails per inbox). The reason we do this is because we realize that all of your emails are probably stored on a separate email server(work email, gmail, etc) but in the event of getting a new/replacement phone, you will want quick access to your most recent emails.
Currently, SmrtGuard Pro for Android does not backup emails, but it is a feature we are working on.
Q4: I do NOT live in the USA, will SmrtGuard work?
Yes, SmrtGuard will work but to be able to use the remote web commands such as locate, audio ping, remote wipe, etc, you will need the following:
1. For BlackBerry smartphones, you will need to have a blackberry native email account setup on your device. (Ask your service provider on how to set this up).
2. For Android smartphones, you will need to select the correct network service provider and verify your mobile number from the Account settings. From the Account tab there is a "Switch/Edit Device" link that will allow you to edit your carrier/mobile number information. If your service provider is not listed, please contact our support team at support@smrtguard.com .
Q5: What smartphones are SmrtGuard compatible with?
Currently, SmrtGuard is compatible with BlackBerry and Android smartphones. We try our best to be compatible with all the new devices and operating systems that come out. Check here for a list of what we currently support.
Q6: Will I need to re-purchase if in the future I switch to a new Android or BlackBerry smartphone?
Our service is designed so that it makes switching easier and encourages you to switch :) So no, you do not need to re-purchase when you switch from an old Android/BlackBerry to a new Android/BlackBerry.
Q7: Do you have a mobile login site such that when I switch devices, I don't need to use my PC?
Yes, point your mobile browser to www.smrtguard.com/m and you can login and download our software for your replacement or new smarphone.
Q8: I have a Mac and not a PC, will this work?
SmrtGuard software installs on your BlackBerry and comes with a companion website. As long as you have a supported BlackBerry/Android smarphone and a web browser on your desktop (PC or Mac) you should be good to go.
Q9: How secure is SmrtGuard?
Security is very important to us and realize how critical it is to protect sensitive information. We designed SmrtGuard with this in mind to give you the peace of mind! We access your information over 256-bit encrypted SSL secure connection. During the backup process from the device, authentication is done with the same 256-bit encrypted SSL secure connection. In addition, all data transfer between smartphone and server is protected by AES Encryption with key exchanges between our server and the smartphone.
We balance between ease of use and security. Every time you switch device (you can switch as many times as you want), activate or reactivate, we ask you to go through our activation process that involves email verification that relates to our unique key exchanges between the server and smartphone. However "complicated" that sounds, you can go through our secure verification process all from the Smartphone.
